THE ART OF RESTORING HOLLYWOOD CEMETERY IN MEMPHIS

Hollywood Cemetery is the final resting place for Furry Lewis and Frank Stokes, the architects of the Memphis Blues. But it’s also home to the heroes of the 1968 Sanitation Strike—the men who marched with “I AM A MAN” signs to demand dignity on the very day Dr. King was assassinated.

It is a heartbreak that the men who spent their lives keeping our city clean and fighting for our respect are now resting in an abandoned, overgrown cemetery.

We are raising funds to change this. Your donation will go directly toward:

  • Professional clearing of heavy brush and fallen trees.
  • Restoration of headstones that have been swallowed by the earth.
  • Ongoing maintenance so these legends are never forgotten again.

Furry Lewis spent his life sweeping our streets. Let’s return the favor.
